Meadow on Avondale

This garden is situated on a corner lot which was torn up by road construction some years back.  After construction the remaining sandy loam and gravel backfill could not support turf grass, but it is well suited to plants with low nutrient and water needs and high stress tolerance, chosen from dry meadow ecosystems. Seeing the opportunity to create pollinator habitat and beauty in the same space, a dense and diverse designed plant community, including many Ontario native species of flowering perennials and grasses, as well as adapted non-native flowering perennials, was planted.  These plants provide floral food resources and larval hosts for many pollinators, and the plant community is stewarded to allow for these insects to complete their full life cycles.  The uptick in pollinator activity has been remarkable both in terms of numbers and variety of creatures.  Once so much new life comes into a garden it is impossible not to wonder at the diversity of creatures – whether bird, bee or butterfly – learn some names, and want to nurture more!
